As a proud Woolwonga woman, I'm absolutely thrilled to share a journey that's close to my heart – my entry into the Redheads 80th Anniversary Design Competition! This isn't just about creating a cool design; it's about celebrating heritage, igniting new beginnings, and sharing a piece of my soul with Australia.

Redheads matches have been a household staple for generations, and the opportunity to contribute to their legacy through art is incredibly exciting. When I heard about the competition, my mind immediately went to the rich tapestry of traditional Indigenous artwork that has been passed down through my family and community for millennia.

My artwork for the competition is deeply rooted in this tradition. I've drawn inspiration from the intricate dot painting techniques, the earthy colour palettes, and the symbolic storytelling that are hallmarks of Indigenous art. Each dot, each line, each colour choice in my design represents a connection to country, to ancestors, and to the vibrant spirit of our culture. It's a contemporary interpretation, of course, but the essence, the heartbeat of traditional Indigenous art, is undeniably there. I wanted to create something that not only honoured my heritage but also resonated with a wider audience, sparking curiosity and appreciation for the beauty and depth of Aboriginal art.

This competition also marks a significant milestone for me personally. I'm in the process of launching my own art business, May Designs Australia. It's a dream that's been simmering for a long time, born from a desire to share my artistic vision and connect people with Indigenous culture through my work. "May" is a family name, carrying with it the strength and resilience of the women who came before me. Through May Designs Australia, I aim to create unique and meaningful pieces that tell stories, evoke emotions, and celebrate the richness of our land and our people.

Entering the Redheads competition feels like a powerful first step for May Designs Australia. It's a chance to put my art on a national stage, to share my story, and to show the world the beauty and power of Indigenous creativity. Whether my design makes it to the final product or not, the process of creating it, the act of putting my cultural heritage out there, has been incredibly rewarding.

I invite you all to follow my journey with May Designs Australia as I continue to create and share my artwork. Thank you for your support, and here's to lighting up the future, one match – and one artwork – at a time!
